The National Cinema Museum in Turin is currently showcasing a new exhibition titled “Movie Icons: Hollywood props”, which celebrates the iconic designs and items used on Hollywood film sets that have helped create the magic of movies over the last four decades.
Curated by Domenico De Gaetano and collector Luca Cabieri, the exhibition features 117 props from various Hollywood movies, ranging from superhero costumes like the original Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve to iconic weapons like Thor’s hammer and Captain America’s shield. The collection also includes props from popular movies such as Men in Black, Armageddon, The Last Samurai, and Friday the 13th.
Domenico points out that these items hold a unique significance in the world of cinema, as they are designed objects that are displayed as artifacts in an art gallery. Visitors to the exhibition can marvel at the physicality of these objects, which stand in stark contrast to the digital world of filmmaking.
While the exhibition showcases the rich history of Hollywood props, the museum is also looking towards the future by embracing new technology such as VR installations and exploring the overlap between video games and cinema. With challenges such as the shift to streaming and the decline of physical film posters, the museum is adapting to ensure it remains relevant in the ever-changing film industry.
“Movie Icons: Hollywood props” is on display at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin’s Mole Antonelliana until January 13, 2025. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of Hollywood movies and marvel at the iconic props that have played a crucial role in shaping cinematic history.
