Explanation of Counseling and Mental Health Services Provided by Missouri State Athletics

Missouri State Athletics has made strides in expanding mental health services for its student-athletes, with over 400 individuals benefitting from the program. Dr. Shawn Freeman, the director of psychological services, believes the program has made a positive impact on the athletes, possibly even saving lives. The program, which has been proactive in its approach, offers a range of services including crisis intervention, eating disorders, and mental health screening.

Freeman’s goal is to ensure that athletes are comfortable with themselves, regardless of their performance on the field. The success of the program has led to plans of expanding with the addition of more staff and students. Athletes are referred to mental health services through various channels including coaches, trainers, and self-referral, with services being confidential and free.

The athletes utilizing the mental health services face a variety of challenges, including the pressures of being in the spotlight, relationship issues, and the transition to college life. Athletes are encouraged to seek help if they are facing immediate crises, with resources such as the 988 suicide and crisis hotline and local crisis centers being available.

Freeman emphasizes the importance of athletes opening up about their struggles to reduce stigma and promote mental health awareness. By offering support and a message of hope, the program aims to help athletes navigate their challenges and ultimately reach a better place.
