A 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Crooks, used a drone to survey a rally site in Pennsylvania before shooting former President Donald Trump in the ear at a rally in Butler. The drone was made by DJI and provided Crooks with an overhead view that may have helped him plan his attack. Crooks was killed by the Secret Service after the assassination attempt. The use of a drone is seen as a security failure that allowed the gunman to get close to Trump. The Secret Service typically bans drones over areas they are securing, but it’s unclear if that happened at the rally. Investigators recovered a drone and drone equipment from Crooks’ vehicle. The motive for the assassination attempt remains unknown. The Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General has launched probes into the Secret Service’s handling of the event in Butler. House Speaker Mike Johnson has pledged a Congressional investigation, and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has been asked to appear before the House Oversight Committee.
