American journalist Evan Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison after being found guilty of espionage in a trial in Yekaterinburg. Gershkovich, 32, denied the charges and his employer, The Wall Street Journal, condemned the trial as a sham. The state prosecutor had originally requested an 18-year sentence for Gershkovich. The U.S. government has also denounced the charges as unjust, stating that he was wrongfully detained. The case is still developing, and updates are expected.
