Educators in Missouri will have the opportunity to receive mental health training at a virtual training event in August. The training, a partnership between DESE, the Missouri Department of Mental Health, and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, will cover a variety of topics related to mental health in schools. Participants, including nurses, teachers, and administrators, will work to assess their current school mental health systems, set goals, and create plans to implement in their districts. The goal of the training is to help educators provide a positive school experience that goes beyond therapy and behavior, focusing on the continuum from mental illness to mental wellness.
According to Lisa Dierking, the School-Based Mental Health Coordinator for DESE, the program aims to shift the focus of school-based mental health to encompass a broader understanding of mental wellness. Since the training began, 44 school districts have participated, with another 13 districts signed up for the upcoming August session.
The training is designed for teams of at least three staff members who have been identified as knowledgeable about mental health services and support. Districts interested in learning more about the training can find information on the DESE website. For corrections or typos in the article, readers can email digitalnews@ky3.com.
