Judge Aileen Cannon approves Trump’s request to temporarily hold off on some deadlines in classified documents case as immunity concerns arise

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon granted former President Donald Trump’s request for further briefing on the issue of presidential immunity in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, delaying certain deadlines in the process. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s ruling earlier in the week that declared Trump immune from prosecution for some conduct as president. Special counsel Jack Smith was given the option to file a submission on the use of classified information at trial, with a new deadline set for July 18. A reply from Trump’s team is due on July 21. Trump’s lawyers are also working to dismiss two other criminal cases pending against him, including a motion to set aside the verdict in the criminal hush money trial. A sentencing hearing for that case was stayed to allow for further briefing. Trump’s team is expected to focus on evidence involving his official acts to prove his knowledge and intent. Despite these legal challenges, there is still no trial date set for the classified documents case, to which Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The Department of Justice and Trump’s lawyers have not yet commented on these latest developments.
