The Kansas City Fire Department responded to 11 water rescue calls on the Fourth of July morning due to overnight flooding caused by heavy rain. Several creeks and rivers overflowed onto roadways and near homeless camps, prompting a significant rescue effort. Three homeless individuals were saved from a flooded camp near the Blue River, but one person remains missing. Fire crews are continuing to search to ensure the safety of all individuals in the area.
Drivers were urged to avoid flooded roadways and to call 911 if they find themselves stranded in high water. Despite warning signs, some drivers attempted to navigate through flooded areas and ultimately required water rescues. Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins emphasized the dangers of driving through high water, as storm drain covers can come off and create hazardous conditions.
The fire department is continuing to monitor the situation and follow up on areas that were heavily impacted by the flooding. The community is reminded to exercise caution around flooded areas and to follow the instructions of emergency responders. The safety and well-being of residents and individuals affected by the flooding remain a top priority for the Kansas City Fire Department.
