Missouri residents who purchased gas in the state last year may be eligible for a refund due to the gas tax increase. The Missouri Department of Revenue is accepting applications for refunds through an online portal to help people recoup some of the added cost at the pump. The opportunity to apply for refunds extends to gas purchases made between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, with a deadline of September 30, 2024, for submitting claims. To be eligible, applicants must own vehicles weighing less than 26,000 pounds and use them for highway use. In order to file a claim, individuals must provide specific information such as the vehicle identification number, date of sale, names and addresses of the buyer and seller, and the number of gallons purchased with the Missouri fuel tax separate item. The state increased the motor fuel tax by 2.5 cents through 2025 to fund improvements to roads and bridges in Missouri. Drivers looking to claim a refund should ensure they have the necessary documentation and submit their applications before the deadline to receive a partial refund on last year’s gas tax increase.
