Greg Kastner, a former standout pitcher at Missouri Western and legendary high school baseball coach, was recently honored as a Diamond 9 recipient by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Kastner, a graduate of Christian Brothers High School, had a successful career as a pitcher before turning to coaching after an elbow injury cut his playing days short.
During his time at Missouri Western, Kastner recorded an 18-6 record with a 2.20 ERA and 238 strikeouts. He later made it to AAA with the Atlanta Braves before his injury. As a coach at Bishop LeBlond from 1987-2016, Kastner led his teams to an impressive 386-240 overall record and 12 district titles, including seven straight from 1988 to 1994.
In addition to his coaching success, Kastner continues to contribute to the sports community as a public address announcer for high school sports and the St. Joseph Mustangs. His dedication to the game and impact on the lives of young athletes have not gone unnoticed, with this recent recognition by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame highlighting his contributions to the baseball community in northwest Missouri.
