As the conflict in Ukraine continues into its 860th day, the situation on Thursday, July 4, 2024, remains dire. Russian attacks have resulted in casualties in various regions, with reports of civilians being killed and injured. The United Nations human rights office highlighted the high civilian casualties caused by Russian air-dropped bombs in Ukraine.
In terms of politics and diplomacy, Russian authorities handed down harsh sentences for individuals accused of treason for supporting Ukraine. In addition, discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit did not result in progress on peace talks for Ukraine.
On the weapons front, the United States announced $150 million in new military assistance for Ukraine, including a range of missiles, artillery rounds, and anti-armour systems. NATO allies also agreed to provide military aid for Ukraine, with a significant funding amount set for next year. The Czech Ministry of Defence donated equipment from its army storage to Ukraine.
The Netherlands’ new Prime Minister reassured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of unwavering support, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba discussed regional threats with his Israeli counterpart. Amidst the ongoing violence and geopolitical tensions, the situation in Ukraine remains a top concern for the international community.
