Representative Cori Bush, a member of the progressive House Democrats known as “the Squad,” is facing a tough primary challenge in Missouri. A recent poll shows her opponent, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell, is ahead by 1 percentage point. The Mellman Group poll found that 43 percent of likely Democratic primary voters support Bell, while 42 percent support Bush.
Bell’s lead has dramatically shifted from a January poll where Bush was ahead by 16 points. Bell has taken a pro-Israel stance, contrasting with Bush’s criticism of Israel’s actions in the conflict with Hamas. The recent loss of Representative Jamaal Bowman, another Squad member, in his primary race has raised concerns for Bush’s campaign.
The Missouri primary on August 6 will determine if Bush can retain her seat and what this may mean for progressive Democrats who have been vocal about their views on Israel. The Biden administration has supported Israel’s right to self-defense but also called for peace in the region. Bush has vowed to continue fighting for the values she believes in, despite the influence of outside money in elections.
The race remains close, with undecided voters likely playing a crucial role in the outcome. With the primary approaching, all eyes will be on Missouri to see if Bush can secure her seat and maintain the Squad’s presence in Congress.
