Protestors disrupt Tony-winning musical ‘Suffs’ with chants and banner

A Broadway performance of the Tony Award-winning musical “Suffs” was briefly disrupted by protesters unfurling a banner with the slogan “Suffs Is a White Wash” and chanting “Cancel ‘Suffs!'” The protest, lasting only 20 seconds, was quickly resolved as demonstrators were escorted out and the banner removed.

The musical, written by Shaina Taub and produced by Hillary Clinton, addresses racism within the suffragist movement and highlights the contributions of Black women. Despite complaints from a group of self-described “radical, anti-racist, queer feminists,” the show’s producers and creative team did not directly address the group’s concerns.

This incident marks the second disruption of a Broadway show in recent months, following a protest during a performance of “An Enemy of the People” in March. Climate activists interrupted the show with chants of “No theater on a dead planet.”

Fortunately, no performers or audience members were harmed during the protest at the Music Box Theatre. The show’s representative emphasized that safety was not compromised and the disruption was quickly resolved. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing conversations surrounding race, feminism, and activism within the performing arts industry.
