Two St. Louis-area utility providers, Missouri American Water and Ameren Missouri, have filed requests to increase their base rates in order to fund infrastructure upgrades and enhance long-term services. If approved, the rate hikes would result in an increase of nearly $20 per month for average bills from both providers. Missouri American Water aims to support ongoing water and wastewater system investments, totaling $1.5 billion through 2026. Ameren Missouri’s proposed rate hikes are necessary to ensure cleaner electricity, strengthen grids, and recover costs of major electric system upgrades.
Missouri American Water’s projects include the replacement of intake pump stations and transmission mains in various counties. Stating their commitment to public health and safety, they offer assistance programs for customers in need. Ameren Missouri highlights improvements in reliability due to investments made in power line upgrades and smart technology. They also provide flexible payment options and connections to the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for customers struggling with bills.
The requests were filed through the Missouri Public Service Commission, which will make a decision within 11 months after extensive reviews and consultations. Both companies stress their commitment to customer service and ensuring reliable utility services for all customers. The rate hikes, if approved, would bring about significant changes to monthly utility bills for St. Louis residents.
