Ethiopia, as a member of the African Regional Cooperation Agreement for the Development of Nuclear Science and Technology Research (AFRA), is gearing up to strengthen its use of nuclear technology. This was announced by the Minister of Innovation and Technology at the AFRA Technical Working Group’s 35th meeting. AFRA, established in 1990, aims to enhance socioeconomic development in Africa through nuclear science and technology with a budget of €10m annually, fostering cooperation among member states for shared interests.
Despite the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) not being a part of AFRA, it plays a crucial role by providing technical and scientific support to member states, following the IAEA’s technical cooperation programme guidelines. Ethiopia recently unveiled plans to establish a nuclear science and technology research center in the country, with students set to study in China and Russia for advanced knowledge in the field. Minister Belete Mola of Innovation and Technology mentioned ongoing discussions with Russia’s Rosatom for the construction of the center post a feasibility study.
