A new docuseries titled “Let Us Prey: A Ministry of Scandals” is bringing attention to allegations of abuse within Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches, with a focus on two religious schools in southwest Missouri. Circle of Hope and Agape Boarding School, both located in Cedar County, have faced years of accusations of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse against children. The criticism of these schools intensified in 2020 when an investigation by the Kansas City Star shed light on the claims, leading to more former students coming forward.
Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Sharon Liese, who is based in Overland Park, the docuseries aims to amplify the voices of abuse victims who have been silenced for too long. “Let Us Prey” premiered on Investigation Discovery last week and is now available to stream on Max.
Rebecca Randles, an attorney representing victims of abuse, and Ruthy Heiler, a survivor and subject in the docuseries, are also featured in the series. Circle of Hope closed in 2020, while Agape Boarding School remained open until January of this year. Liese hopes that the docuseries will raise awareness about the abuse that has occurred within these religious institutions and encourage more survivors to come forward and seek justice.
