Retired California deputy’s family stops searching in Greece, suspecting foul play

The family of retired California sheriff’s deputy Albert Calibet, missing in Greece since June 11, has ended the search for him but fears foul play may be involved. Calibet, who left the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2018, disappeared while on vacation and preparing to go to the Greek island of Amorgos, a place he had visited regularly since 2009. Despite extensive search efforts involving helicopters, drones, and local crews, no evidence of Calibet was found. The family faced obstacles from Greek authorities and received little assistance from the U.S. Embassy. Calibet’s brother, Oliver, expressed concern for their own safety and uncertainty about the next steps. The family thanked search and rescue teams and donors. Two other tourists recently disappeared in Greece, with one, British television presenter Michael Mosley, found dead due to natural causes, and the other found dead near a beach on Mathraki. The Department of State expressed prioritizing the safety of U.S. citizens abroad. The family hopes for a different outcome in Calibet’s case but is uncertain about the future.
