Starmer maintains commitment to closer EU ties despite far-right victory in France

UK Labour leader Keir Starmer has expressed his willingness to work with any government in Europe, even if the far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen enters government in France. Starmer, whose Labour party is leading in the opinion polls ahead of Thursday’s general election, stated that his party’s intention to renegotiate part of the post-Brexit Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU remains unchanged.

The first round of snap legislative elections in France saw the National Rally emerge as the frontrunner, with Macron’s centrist alliance trailing behind. Starmer’s comments come as President Macron’s political gamble unfolds, with the potential for a far-right victory in France.

Starmer emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of disaffected citizens, advocating for progressive solutions to challenges in the UK and Europe. He has hinted at plans to re-open the post-Brexit trade deal with Brussels, focusing on areas like chemicals regulation and financial services for potential alignment with the EU.

However, Starmer has clarified that he will not seek re-joining the EU’s single market or customs union, nor will he allow the return of freedom of movement. The Labour leader’s stance aligns with a clause in the post-Brexit TCA that allows for a review of the deal in 2026.

As the UK general election approaches, Starmer’s commitment to negotiating a better deal with the EU while working with governments across Europe underscores his approach to addressing political challenges with progressive solutions.
